You May Think That Thanksgiving Began as...
After reading The Mayflower, by Nathanael Philbrick, I concluded that the actual term 'Thanksgiving' was not given at it's original event. It is important for students to understand how the holiday came to be, and which traditions actually stem back to the historical references we have.
This storybird represents the time in history when the Pilgrims celebrated the event we now call Thanksgiving. In The Mayflower, by Nathaniel Philbrick, this is represented on page 117.
This is important to consider because at the time this event built the Pilgrims relationship with the Pokanet tribe. If things hadn't gone this way they should not have survived.
When I think about it now I realize that we need to represent the true story of this event, and consider the perspectives of both the Pilgrims and Native Americans.
I still wonder how we can more accurately represent this event in our society today.
