The Journal of Jasper Jonathan Pierce by Ann Rinaldi links history with a 14 year old, indentured servant's possible experiences coming to America. The age and perspective of Jasper Jonathan Pierce provide students a connection to the story. By implementing activities and vocabulary words throughout the book, it can successfully be used to educate students on the events that transpired on the Mayflower, and when it's passengers arrived in America. The essential questions listed on the lesson plans page will give a glimpse of the big ideas that can be addressed. The lessons are designed to correlate with assigned reading either in or out of class, depending on time limitations. This book is a wonderful opportunity to begin helping students determine what primary and secondary sources are, and how we use those sources to our advantages when learning about our past and the present. The reading level is for grades 5-6, and the entire book is 155 pages.
